Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has appointed Ann Kananu Mwenda as his nominee to the position of Nairobi County Deputy Governor.
According to Sonko, his decision to finally fill the void left by Polycarp Igathe in 2018 was fueled by the complexity of the situation in the county, following a decision by the court blocking him from office.
“Given the foregoing and in the interest of ensuring stability at Kenya’s Capital City and the largest county by economy and population, I do hereby nominate Ann Kananu Mwenda to the position of Deputy Governor,” Sonko wrote in a statement seen by Opera News.
In his statement, Sonko defended the close to two years legal vacuum in the office of the deputy governor, saying that motion is currently in discussion at the Senate on the exact legal process of appointing a deputy governor.
The ball is now in the Nairobi County Assembly’s court to vet Sonko’s nominee.
